Apps are fast to install and slow to remove. Each one adds JavaScript, webhooks and another vendor in your critical path.
Write the job in one sentence. If Shopify native tools cover most of it, skip the app.
| Gate | Question | Fail looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Job | What exact user story? | Vague “growth” or “engagement” |
| Overlap | Does another app already do this? | Two scripts fighting on the PDP |
| Speed | Mobile scores after enable? | No before/after measurement |
| Exit | What data remains after uninstall? | Unknown metafields and leftovers |
1. Map the job to be done
Write the user story in one sentence. If the theme or Shopify native feature already covers most of it, an app may be unnecessary weight.
2. Check for overlap
Stores often run separate apps for reviews, upsells, search and analytics that all inject scripts on the PDP.
3. Measure before and after
Capture mobile scores on homepage, collection and PDP before install. Re-test after enabling.
4. Plan the uninstall path
Ask what data persists and document cleanup steps before go-live.
