Shopify search returns no products when the item is not actually available to the online store, or when the words in the title and tags do not match what shoppers type. It feels like a bug. It is often a catalogue setup.
Open the product. Confirm status is Active, Online Store is checked, and the title or tags contain the search words. Then test in a private window. If a search app is installed, check that its index has finished.
Fixes that do not need a new theme
- Put the name customers use in the title, not only in a metafield
- Stop hiding sold-out products if you still want them findable
- Remove a second search app if Shopify search was already enough
- Check the search template if results exist in admin but the page is blank
A blank search template after edits is the same family of issue as a theme update breaking the store.
When it is a build problem
Predictive search, filters and a custom search results section are custom development. Collection filters that fight search are part of store design. See also duplicate collection pages if the same products appear under five URLs and search still feels empty.
That is a theme or app issue. Send the store URL and an example query.
