A Shopify theme update broke the store when custom code lived in files the update replaced. The homepage can look fine while the product template, a size guide or the cart drawer is gone.
Online store, Themes. If an older copy is there, publish it to restore the shop. Then update a duplicate and compare product, collection and cart on a phone before you publish the new version.
What usually vanished
- Custom sections that were coded into the theme, not added as app blocks
- CSS that fought the new theme stylesheet
- App embeds that need to be turned on again
- A product template that was assigned to only some products
This is the same class of problem as an app breaking add to cart. Both happen when nobody owns the theme after launch.
How to update next time
Duplicate the live theme. Update the duplicate. Click through a product with variants, a collection and the cart. If the theme is heavily custom, that review is monthly maintenance, not a button the founder should press on a Friday.
If the layout was already failing before the update, a redesign is cleaner than patching the old files again.
Tell us the theme name and what disappeared. Ask for a recovery review.
