Shopify’s theme editor is more capable than a lot of founders think, and less magical than Theme Store videos suggest. You can rearrange a homepage in an afternoon. You cannot invent a new product type by dragging a block.

If you are still choosing a theme, start with theme vs custom theme. This page is what you can change after the theme is installed.

Quick answer

Customise colours, fonts, logos, menus, sections and any settings the theme author exposed. Call a developer when you need a new template, a new section type, or behaviour the setting panel does not list. Duplicate the theme before you edit code.

If the control exists in the editor, try that before opening a Liquid file.

What the editor is good at

Brand basics: logo, favicon, colours, typography, buttons. Navigation: header menus, footer menus, sometimes mega-menu settings if the theme has them. Homepage: add, remove and reorder sections the theme already ships. Product page: show or hide blocks the theme defined (description, collapsible tabs, related products).

You can also assign a different template to one product or collection if the theme includes extra templates. That is how a gift card product can look different from a ring without a new theme.

What usually needs a developer

A section type that does not exist (for example a lookbook that ties to real product cards). A product form that changes price from metafields. A collection filter the theme’s filtering cannot do. Header behaviour that fights the paid theme’s JavaScript. App-like features built into the theme that you want gone, not just hidden.

Checkout is its own box. Shopify’s checkout is not the theme editor. What you can change depends on the plan and on Shopify’s current checkout APIs. Read Shopify’s docs for your plan. We do checkout-related storefront work under checkout customisation when the request is actually allowed.

Change Editor Code or app
Logo, colours, font Yes Rarely
Homepage section order Yes Only if the section type is missing
New product template layout Sometimes, if a second template exists Yes, if you need a new structure
Variant logic and metafield UI Limited Usually code
Reviews, subscriptions, search No App, chosen carefully
Checkout fields and rules No Shopify checkout features for your plan

Habits that keep customisation sane

Duplicate the theme and work on the copy. Name the unpublished theme something you will recognise in six months. Keep a short note of CSS snippets and app embeds. Uninstall the app if you hide the feature. Hidden embeds still load.

Do not stack page-builder apps on a theme that already has sections. Two systems fighting for the homepage is how apps slow a store.

When the editor is not enough, that is theme development, not another paid theme. Homepage section choices for a first store are in Shopify homepage design.
