Shopify apps earn their keep when they do a job the theme cannot. They cost you when they add JavaScript to every page for a feature you use on one product. Slow stores are often an app list problem, not a “Shopify is slow” problem.
Diagnosis: why the store is slow. Fix order: how to speed up a store. This page is the app-shaped part of that list.
Remove unused apps and unused app embeds. Keep one tool per job. Be hardest on popups, builders, chat, and anything that loads sitewide. Then re-measure the same mobile pages.
App types that often load everywhere
We are naming types, not a public shame list of app brands. A well-built reviews app can be lighter than a cheap popup. Judge the embed, not the App Store star rating.
| Type | Why it gets expensive |
|---|---|
| Popups and teaser bars | Load on all pages, often before the product |
| Page builders | A second layout engine beside the theme |
| Chat and bots | Third-party script plus a bubble on every template |
| Reviews and UGC | Needed on products, sometimes still global |
| Loyalty and rewards | Floats and account layers on every visit |
| Personalisation and “AI merch” | Extra requests before the first paint |
| Heatmaps and session replay | Useful in short tests, costly if left on forever |
| Urgency and fake stock | Timers plus layout shift, little real value |
| SEO suites | Can inject extra JSON-LD and scripts |
| Speed optimiser apps | Another script claiming to remove other scripts |

How to audit without guessing
Open the live store in a private window. Use the browser’s network filter for JavaScript. Note names you do not recognise. In the theme editor, open App embeds and turn off anything you cannot explain. Uninstall apps you turned off. Hidden is not uninstalled.
Run the same three URLs through a lab test. Our page speed test is one option. Walk the speed checklist after you cut apps, not before.
Duplicates are worse than one heavy tool
Two popup apps, two review widgets, two “recently viewed” tools. New stores collect these from agencies and from “growth” checklists. Keep one. See apps new stores actually need for the job list.
If the leftover job is unique (configurator, custom price), stop stacking near-miss apps and scope custom development.
