Technical SEO on a small company site is plumbing. Can a crawler get the homepage, is there one official URL, and are you accidentally telling Google to go away? You do not need an enterprise crawl budget lecture.

Content and titles: new-site SEO checklist. Shopify plumbing: Shopify technical SEO. Speed: speed and SEO.

Quick answer

HTTPS, one hostname, public pages (no leftover noindex), a sitemap in Search Console, sensible canonicals, and images that do not stall the phone. Then stop adding SEO plugins.

Crawler reaching a clean small-business homepage on one HTTPS domain
If the URL is messy, the copy never gets a chance.

The plumbing list

  1. Open the site in a private window on the real domain. If you see a host parking page, DNS is not done. Connect the domain.
  2. Force HTTPS. Redirect http to https.
  3. Pick www or bare and 301 the other.
  4. Search the HTML for noindex. Staging leftovers are a classic launch bug.
  5. Confirm robots.txt does not disallow the whole site.
  6. Generate a sitemap and submit it in Search Console. WordPress plugins can do this. A small custom site can use a static sitemap if the page list is short.
  7. Each important page should have one clear URL. Parameters for tracking can stay. Faceted junk should not be indexed.
  8. Set canonical tags if you have duplicates. Do not point every page at the homepage.
  9. Soft 404s: thank-you pages and empty search results should not look like 200 success content you want ranked.
  10. Check mobile rendering. Hidden text in tabs still counts as on the page if it is in the HTML. Cloaking does not.
