AI image tools can remove a messy background from a phone photo in a minute. They can also invent a ring that is not the ring in your warehouse. On Shopify, the first use is helpful. The second use is how you buy returns and chargebacks.

We will not rank photo apps. Features and names change. This is a workflow. Last reviewed: September 2026.

Quick answer

Shoot the real product. Use AI to clean the background or extend a scene if the item still matches. Do not generate a hero image of a product you have never photographed. Compress before upload. Keep alt text honest: describe the picture you actually show.

Real product photo on a clean background used as a Shopify hero image
The hero should be the item you ship. Lifestyle can sit after it.

A workflow that stays honest

Photograph the product in even light. Pick one hero angle. Run a background cleanup if the wall is ugly. Check edges, reflections and colour against the real piece. Export a sensible size. Upload to Shopify. Do not lazy-load that first image. Extra gallery shots can wait. Details are in the speed checklist.

Lifestyle scenes (a table, a model, a street) are optional extras. If the model’s hands or the metal colour look generated, shoppers notice. Jewellery and apparel are unforgiving.

Use Usually fine Risky
Background removal Yes, if edges stay true Halos that change the silhouette
Colour correction Small fixes A gold that is not your gold
Generated scene Secondary image, clearly extra Hero that hides the real item
Fully generated product Mockups, not the live PDP Selling a SKU that photo invented

Platforms and ad accounts have rules about misleading images. We are not your lawyer. If a reasonable shopper would think the AI scene is a studio photo of that exact SKU, you are in the danger zone. Keep the raw photo.

Alt text should describe the image, not stuff keywords. That is the same rule as product page SEO.
