GEO means generative engine optimisation. People use it for “show up when ChatGPT or another generative tool writes the answer”. It is a useful label if it makes you write clearer pages. It is a bad product if someone sells it as a guaranteed citation package.
We already compared the three acronyms in SEO vs AEO vs GEO. This page is only GEO, in more detail, without repeating that whole table.
GEO is the work of making your brand easy to quote in a generated answer: stable facts, clear entity (who you are), pages a model can cite without embarrassment. It sits on top of a crawlable site. It does not replace Google SEO.
What GEO is trying to describe
A generative tool does not only return ten blue links. It writes paragraphs. Sometimes it cites websites. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes it invents a detail. GEO is the hope that a clean, factual page is more usable than a thin one when that happens.
That hope is reasonable. It is not a specification. OpenAI, Google and others change products. There is no official “GEO console” that matches Search Console. Anyone who quotes a universal “GEO ranking factor” is ahead of the evidence.
What to do that is not theatre
Put the business name, location and what you sell on the About and contact pages. Keep product specs visible. Keep prices and shipping honest. Answer real questions in visible FAQs. Use structured data only when it matches the page. Those steps also help AI search readiness on Shopify.
Write like a person who knows the product. Keyword-stuffed blog posts written “for GEO” are still thin pages. Models do not owe you a citation because you repeated a phrase.
| Useful GEO habit | Not useful |
|---|---|
| Facts on the page | Hidden keyword blocks |
| Consistent brand name | Three trading names with no explanation |
| Policies you follow | Invented statistics |
| Pages you will update | Fifty thin posts published in a week |
Clear page → possible citation in a generated answer. Broken page → skip or guess. ALT: Simple diagram of a clear website being cited versus a thin page being skipped.
How this relates to AEO
AEO is the short-answer version: a featured snippet, a voice reply, a two-sentence card. GEO is the longer generated write-up. The writing style is similar. Lead with the answer, then add detail. Our journal FAQs are built that way on purpose.
If you sell on Shopify, do the product-page work in product page SEO before you buy a GEO retainer. If you run a company site, the same idea applies to service pages. Hosting sits underneath that site. See choosing hosting if the site is not on Shopify.
That is ordinary Shopify development or business website work. We will not sell guaranteed ChatGPT mentions. Send the URL.
