If your Shopify store takes too long to load, some visitors will leave before they see the product. You do not fix that by redesigning the logo. You fix it by measuring the pages people actually open, then removing weight in a sensible order.

Quick answer

Measure mobile on the homepage, one collection and one product page. Remove unused apps and scripts. Compress hero media. Then change theme code. Guessing “the theme is slow” first is how stores stay slow.

Shopify store speed and Core Web Vitals overview
Treat LCP, interaction delay and layout shift as separate jobs.

Measure the pages shoppers use

Do not optimise a password page or a forgotten landing template. Open the homepage, a busy collection and a top product page on a phone width. Walk add to cart if you can.

Use a lab report as a list of suspects. Our page speed test is one way to capture that. Google PageSpeed Insights is another. Write down Largest Contentful Paint (the main visible thing), interaction delay and layout shift. Then look at the store with your eyes.

If you only know it “feels laggy” and not which page, read why is my Shopify store slow first. That article is diagnosis. This one is the fix order.

Remove unused apps before you rewrite Liquid

Every app that injects a script on all pages has a cost. Reviews, upsells, popups, heatmaps and chat tools add up. Uninstall what you do not use. Disable storefront embeds you forgot about.

Two apps doing the same job is common: two popup tools, two review widgets, two urgency timers. Keep one. For a fuller audit mindset, see what to check before you install a Shopify app.

Fix the hero and product media

The first large image or video is often the Largest Contentful Paint. A wide PNG banner or an autoplay video on the homepage will dominate the report. Compress it. Use a sensible size. Do not lazy-load that first image.

On product pages, the first image should be ready. Extra gallery shots can wait. Shopify can serve resized images, but it cannot invent a small file if you uploaded a huge one.

Calm the layout

Layout shift happens when something appears late and pushes the page down: a font swap, a review star block, a sticky bar, an announcement that loads after the header. Reserve space for those blocks or load them in a way that does not jump the add to cart button.

Sticky add-to-cart bars and third-party chat bubbles are frequent offenders on mobile. If both fight for the bottom of the screen, shoppers feel it even when the lab score looks fine.

Symptom Usual cause First move
Homepage waits on a big picture Heavy hero or slider Compress or replace the first slide
Every page feels heavy Apps on all templates Remove unused embeds
Buttons jump while loading Late bars, fonts, reviews Reserve space, delay non-critical UI
Taps feel late Long JavaScript tasks Cut scripts, then profile the theme

Then touch the theme

After apps and media are honest, look at the theme: unused sections on the homepage, extra sliders, app-like features built into a paid theme you never turned off. A free theme is not always faster than a paid one. Weight is the issue.

We wrote a shorter Core Web Vitals note here: improve Shopify Core Web Vitals without guessing. Use it when you already know the metric names.

If the theme itself is the problem, that is Shopify development or a store redesign, not another speed app.

What not to do

Do not install a “speed optimiser” app on top of five other apps and hope. Do not chase a 100 lab score while the cart still waits on three trackers. Do not replace the theme every quarter without measuring.

Shopify hosting is not the same problem as a business website on shared or cloud hosting. Shopify stores still pay for every extra script you add.
