When someone says “Shopify is slow”, they usually mean one page on a phone. The homepage slider waits. The product gallery jumps. Add to cart ignores the first tap. Those are different faults. If you treat them as one “speed problem”, you will buy the wrong fix.
This article is diagnosis. The repair list lives in how to speed up a Shopify store.
Name the slow page. Then check apps that load everywhere, the first large image or video, and theme extras you never use. Shopify’s hosting is rarely the first place to look.
Name the page and the feeling
Ask three questions. Which URL? Mobile or desktop? Does it wait to appear, jump while loading, or ignore taps?
Waiting to appear is often a large hero or a late app. Jumping is layout shift. Ignored taps are too much JavaScript. You can see all three on one product page at once. Write them down anyway.

Apps that load on every page
Open the theme app embeds and your installed apps. Anything that runs on all pages (chat, popup, currency converter, extra tracker) tax the whole store. A review app that only loads on product templates is usually cheaper than a popup that follows the customer to the cart.
Founders install tools during launch week and forget them. The leftover embed is a common reason a store “got slower” without a redesign.
Images and video
A homepage video background will make a mid-range phone work. A product image exported from a camera at full size will do the same. Shopify can resize, but it still downloads a lot if the source file is huge.
If only collections feel slow, you may be loading too many product cards with uncropped images. If only one product is slow, look at that product’s media count and the apps on that template.
The theme itself
Some themes ship with sliders, lookbooks, countdowns and app-like sections enabled on the homepage by default. Turn off what you do not use. If you need a different structure, that is theme work, not a new hosting plan.
You can check which theme a public store uses with our Shopify theme detector. Detection does not fix speed. It tells you what you are standing on.
| If this is slow | Look here first |
|---|---|
| Homepage | Slider, video, apps in the header |
| Collection | Product card images, filters, infinite scroll |
| Product | Gallery, reviews, upsells, sticky bars |
| Every page | App embeds and tracking scripts |
| Cart / checkout start | Cart drawer apps, extra checkout scripts |
What is not the usual cause
Switching to Shopify Plus to “get better servers” while leaving eight apps in place. Moving the whole shop to WordPress because a blog said hosting is cheaper. Installing a speed app without removing the scripts that caused the report.
Shopify is not Hostinger. If you are building a company website, hosting choice matters. For the shop, you are paying for what the theme and apps ship to the browser.
Send the slow URL and a 20-second phone screen recording if you have one. NP SoftTech reviews this on development and maintenance work. Start with the store URL.
