Shopify will not rank a store because the theme looks modern. Search still needs clear titles, unique product text, honest collection pages and a store that loads on a phone. This checklist is the order we use on store reviews before anyone buys another SEO app.

Last reviewed: September 2026. Shopify admin labels move. Recheck Online Store, Preferences and the theme editor if a menu name has changed.

Quick answer

Do the work inside Shopify first: titles, URLs, unique copy, images, internal links and speed. Apps and agencies help after those basics exist. If a page has nothing useful to say, Google has nothing useful to show.

Checklist layout for Shopify SEO tasks
Treat SEO as a store job: titles, products, collections, then speed.

What Shopify already does for you

A live Shopify store can be indexed. Shopify generates a sitemap and lets you edit titles, meta descriptions and URL handles. That is the starting point, not the finished job.

Shopify does not invent unique collection text. It does not compress every app you installed. It does not decide whether your product title sounds like a catalogue code or like something a person would type.

1. Titles, URLs and the homepage

Open Online Store, then Preferences. Write a homepage title that names the store and what it sells. The meta description should say who it is for and what someone can buy. Do not stuff the same keyword three times.

On products, use the Search engine listing preview. A useful pattern is product name, then a short qualifier such as material or use, then the brand if it still fits. Keep the URL handle short and readable. Avoid dumping the full SKU into the slug unless shoppers actually search that SKU.

On collections, do the same. “Jewellery” as a title is weak if you sell gold rings for daily wear. “Gold rings for daily wear” tells a person and a search engine what the page is.

2. Product pages that can rank

A product page needs more than a title and four photos. Write what the item is, who it is for, what is included, materials, size or fit, and what happens after purchase (shipping and returns in plain language).

If you used an AI draft, edit it. Delete the sentences that could sit on any store. Keep facts a shopper can check.

3. Collections without thin content

A collection that is only a grid of products is easy to duplicate across the internet. Add a short introduction that explains the range. Two or three honest paragraphs beat a 600-word block copied onto every collection.

Do not create dozens of near-identical collections just to target extra keywords. If two collections show the same products and the same paragraph, merge them.

4. Images and alt text

Compress images before upload. Shopify can resize, but a 6MB photo still wastes time on mobile. Name files in plain language before you upload them.

Alt text should describe the image. “Gold hoop earrings on a white background” is useful. “Buy gold hoop earrings online India cheap” is not alt text. It is stuffing.

5. Technical checks inside Shopify

Confirm the store is indexable: password page off, and you have not noindexed templates by accident. Check that canonical URLs look normal on products and collections.

Use one hostname. If both www and non-www resolve, pick one in your domain settings. Broken redirects waste crawl time after a migration. If you moved from another platform, follow a SEO-safe Shopify migration checklist.

Structured data on Shopify product pages is usually present through the theme. Do not add a second SEO app that injects duplicate Product schema unless you have checked the live HTML. Two Product graphs on one page can confuse tools more than they help.

Check Where Done when
Homepage title Online Store, Preferences Store and category are clear
Product titles and handles Each product, listing preview Readable, not a SKU dump
Collection intro Collection description Unique to that range
Image weight and alt Product media Files compressed, alt describes the photo
Index and domain Domain and preferences One live hostname, store is public
Speed on mobile Homepage, collection, PDP Heavy apps and hero media are under control

6. Speed is part of SEO

A page that answers the query still fails if it takes too long on a mid-range Android phone. Cut unused apps, compress the hero image and stop stacking popups. We wrote a separate walkthrough: how to speed up a Shopify store. If you only know it “feels slow”, start with why the store is slow.

You can also run a lab check on our page speed test. Treat lab scores as clues, not a trophy.

From a blog note, link to the collection or product that actually helps. From a collection, link to a related guide if you have one. From the homepage, do not hide every important collection behind a single “Shop” button with no text around it.

Related posts at the end of this article are there so you can go deeper. They are not a second sitemap.

What this checklist is not

It is not a promise that you will rank for a competitive head term next month. It is not a replacement for a useful product and a site that can take payment. In India, checkout still depends on a local gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PhonePe. SEO that sends traffic to a broken pay page wastes the visit.
