Shopify is software for selling products online. Shopify runs the store, the admin and the checkout environment. You add products, pick a theme, connect a domain and take payment. You do not install WooCommerce on a server and hope the checkout stays patched.
That is the useful part. The confusing part is thinking the monthly plan is the whole business. The plan is the tool. Photos, shipping rules and a working gateway are still yours.
Shopify hosts your shop and gives you an admin for products, orders and themes. You still write the catalogue, choose a theme, connect a domain and add a payment method. In India that method is usually a third-party gateway, not Shopify Payments.
Customer → product page → cart → checkout → payment → order. ALT: Shopify checkout flow from product page to paid order.
What you get when you open a store
A Shopify account gives you a storefront and a back office. The storefront is the website shoppers see. The back office is where you add products, collections, discounts, pages and settings. Shopify also generates a sitemap and lets you edit titles. That is why people say Shopify “includes SEO”. It includes the switches. It does not write unique product text.
Every store starts on a myshopify.com URL. You can keep that for testing. For a real brand, connect your own domain. Shopify’s help centre covers connecting a domain you already own.
How a sale actually happens
A shopper opens a product, picks a variant, adds it to cart and pays on Shopify’s checkout. Inventory and the order land in your admin. If you use a shipping app or a 3PL, that is extra setup. If you use WhatsApp to confirm COD, that is your process sitting next to Shopify, not inside the plan by default.
Themes control how the store looks. Apps add jobs the theme does not do: reviews, subscriptions, fancy search. Each app can add a monthly bill and extra scripts. That is why a “simple Shopify store” becomes slow. See why Shopify stores get slow.
What Shopify does not do for you
It does not photograph the product. It does not decide your return policy. It does not replace GST invoices or a local courier contract. It does not host your company “About + Services” site if you also want a non-shop website. That second site is ordinary hosting. We cover that in how to choose hosting.
In India, payment is the line founders miss. Shopify Payments is not the usual path here. You connect Razorpay, Cashfree or PhonePe, then you also pay Shopify’s third-party transaction fee on the plan you pick. Details sit on Shopify’s India pricing page. We break the money into buckets in Shopify pricing in India and what it costs to build a store.
| Piece | Who owns it |
|---|---|
| Store software and checkout environment | Shopify |
| Theme look and templates | You, a theme author or a developer |
| Products, photos, policies | You |
| Payment in India | A gateway plus Shopify’s third-party fee |
| Apps | You, until you uninstall them |
When Shopify is the wrong first buy
If you only need a five-page company site and a contact form, Shopify is the expensive way to publish a brochure. If you need a shop with variants, discounts and a serious checkout, Shopify is built for that. WordPress vs Shopify is the comparison when you are still choosing a stack.
